It seems like just yesterday when I was checking into The Happiest Place On Earth…and no, I’m not talking about Disneyland, but the best dorm EVER: Hotchkiss! Most of the exciting moments that I experienced happened in Hotchkiss. From winning both the girls and guys Master’s Cups, to late night/early morning study parties in the lounge, to building relationships that will last a lifetime, to growing deeper in my walk with the Lord, Master’s has exceeded my expectations about what I thought college would be like. I am so privileged and blessed to be able to go to a school where I am surrounded by other believers.

This year, God opened my eyes to so many things in my life that needed work. In my Biblical Counseling class we did a Personal Improvement Project. We picked what we thought was the biggest sin issue in our lives and we dissected and worked on it over the course of the entire semester. Mine was people pleasing. I realized that a lot of the time I am interested in what others think about who I am, what I do and how I look, rather than pleasing God. It is so selfish to be concerned about what others think when we look at what Jesus did on the cross for us. He was unashamed. He bled and died for us, and I’m here worried about what people are going to think of me if I share the Gospel with them. Not ok! Our focus needs to be on Christ 24/7 and not about what other people think about us. It became clear to me that trying to impress people did absolutely nothing for me. All it did was make me an anxious, worrisome wreck, and that’s not what God wants.

“The people-pleaser is discontented with his status in life. He longs to have more authority, greater honor, more influence, and more wealth. Rather than being thankful for what has been given to him and for Gods wise distribution of blessings to all men for his purposes, the approval-seeking idolater covets the honor-producing blessings that God has given to others, as though all of God’s purposes revolved around bestowing honor on himself.” – Pleasing People by Lou Priolo

For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you do receive it, why do you boast as though you did not? – 1 Corinthians 4:7

It is bad enough for a person to think he is responsible for the blessings in life. It is way worse to use those blessings to endorse one’s own glory and reputation rather than the glory and reputation of the One who is truly responsible for them.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. – James 1:17

With contentment also comes trusting the Lord. I have learned that it is so much better to trust the Lord with the big and little things of life rather than worry about them myself. Obviously it’s not easy, because as fallen human beings we want to control things ourselves. But God is the Sustainer of our lives and He knows our needs and will provide them for us in His perfect timing, which teaches us patience, because often times our timing isn’t the same as God’s. But God knows us better than we do, so we need to trust His will for our lives.

Last Minute Decisions

Recently, I’ve been dealing with a lot of last minute cancellation stuff. It’s kind of annoying. Especially, when you’re getting ready to depart for the “Happiest Place on Earth,” and the person you were supposed to go with, decides they aren’t going to go anymore. Sad times! So, this got me thinking about last minute decisions. Some can be good, some can be bad. Say, you’re at church and service just got over. People are hungry. So a decision is made to go out for lunch. That’s a great last minute decision, because you always have fun when you’re eating! And then I thought about possibly the worst last minute decision anyone can make. And that is, waiting…and waiting…and waiting to become a Christian. Let me explain. When I was in like 7th grade my mom would always talk to me about how great God was, and all the great things He has done for me. And at that age, I just shrugged it off, and thought, “I’ll become a Christian later.” But I didn’t want to say that to her, because then she would ask why, and she would not like my answer. I remember thinking, “I’ll just wait until I’ve grown up…maybe go to college, get married, or something. Once I’m settled, then I’ll become a Christian.” Looking back at that, I’m disgusted. What in the world was I waiting for? But eventually, my mom figured it out some way or another and she asked me that exact question. A bunch of times! And every time she asked, I had no answer. I was ashamed and guilt always crept up behind me. So, I started asking myself, “Why do I feel guilty about wanting to wait to become a Christian?” So I came to the conclusion that I just wanted to live my life…for me. I didn’t want to be bogged down by a bunch of rules that I had to follow, or sit through sermons that didn’t even make any sense to me at the time. And then, I felt even guiltier than I did before, because I had actually admitted to myself WHY I didn’t want to become a Christian. I let that eat at me for a few years…a few years! I spent so much time wasting my life on...nothing. I could have been doing things for the Lord for those two years, but I was stubborn and did nothing about my guilt. So, eventually I realized me being guilty had to mean something. It meant that I KNEW what Christ had done for me on the cross…I KNEW that He gave his life for me, and yet I still wanted to live for myself. That has got to be the most selfish thing I’ve ever done. So I broke down, repented of my sins, asked to forgive me, and put my complete trust in Him. But the point to all of this is, “Why wait?” Seriously? What are you waiting for? Any reason you give, including the one I had, is not a legit answer. There is nothing that you should be waiting for, nothing.

James 4: 14 – “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

So, what are you waiting for? You could die tomorrow, and never have the chance to trust Christ as your Savior. Do it NOW, why waste a single minute? After all, our life is just a vapor in the wind, who knows what will happen tomorrow?

Matthew 28: 19 – “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

For those of us that are already Christians, this verse doesn’t say, Go make disciples “when you’re ready,” or “when you feel like it.” It’s a command telling us to do it NOW. So let’s do it!

Privilege of Persecution

This past week some of us from True North got the privilege to go on a mission's trip to Mexico! This was my first mission's trip so I was stoked, but at the same time I didnt really know what to expect. I mean, I knew that a majority of the population weren't very wealthy; however, what I saw made my heart break. I know you may hear many people say it, but going down there was such a humbling experience for me, especially after getting the opportunity to play with the kids at the orphanage we were staying at. They didnt have families like we do, let alone many of things that we have, and yet they were still so full of joy! It made me think how ridicuously selfish I can be sometimes when I ask for things and dont even need them, and I just prayed that God would forgive me for being so self centered.

Philippians 2:3-5 - "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. We've been given the gift of salvation and we've also been given the gift to suffer for the name of Christ!

Philippians 1:29-30 - "For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him, since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have."

He kept pouring out verse after verse saying that if you are a follower of Christ, you WILL suffer, and you WILL be persecuted.

These verses really opened my eyes and made me realize that it just doesnt matter what people think of us here on earth; it only matters what our Father thinks of us and how we are spreading His name here while we still can and grabbing hold of every single opportunity that we can to get His name out to the lost.

My prayer is that all of us who went on this mission's trip will keep up the same energy we had to share Christ that we had in Mexico, and spreading His Word wherever we go; we dont have to be on a mission's trip just to tell others what Christ did for all of us!

"People talk of the sacrifice I have made in spending so much of my life in Africa. Can that be called a sacrifice which is simply paid back as a small part of a great debt owing to our God, which we can never repay? ...Away with the word in such a view and with such a thought! It is emphatically no sacrifice. Say rather it is a privilege."

David Livingstone (1813-1873) Scottish missionary to Africa

Choices

I’ve heard a lot of people say that God must have created evil and sin, since God created everything. But it’s not true. God gave man choice. Man “chose” to disobey = sin. There ya have it. We were the masterminds who decided to sin against the Most High God. Pretty smart, huh? But because He is the amazing and AWEsome God that He is, He gave us a way out of spending eternity in hell. He sent His one and only Son to die on the cross for us sinful people, so that we may live and have eternal life with Him in heaven. But before we get that, we must turn our lives completely around, do a 180, repent to God of our sins, and live fully for Him on a daily basis. Another choice that we need to make. Though just because we let Christ reign over us, doesn’t mean that our lives are going to be without sin, temptation and trials. BUT He did provide a way out of every temptation and trial.

1 Corinthians 10: 13 – “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

So, not only did God provide a way out of temptations, but He will never give us anything that we cannot bear. I think that’s pretty gracious of Him. So, I think we all need to consider that there is always a way out of temptation, we just need to not act without thinking, which can lead to a mess. Reading our Bibles and memorizing Scripture are some bigees. If we start memorizing Scripture, when a trial comes up we'll have verses in our head that we can just pop out and realize that there is a way out of whatever were going through. It may be hard for some people to memorize Scripture but trust me, its deffinately worth getting them in our heads. Putting note cards in places you frequently are at in your house is a helpful way and will get you to think about the verse more often.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 - "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

Colossians 3:16 - "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God."

One Anothers

This weekend we had our first High School Winter Retreat for Compass. It was an amazing weekend! Bobby taught a series on "One Anothers." It totally impacted my life in a great way. The second lesson he taught on was about confessing our sins to other people, and confronting others with sin in their lives. This one stood out to me the most...because its not somethin I'm usually thinking about. First of all, I am deffinately not very good at confronting people( I know I need to work on that =] ). And second I honestly never really think about confessing my sins to other people...thinking that God is the only one that I need to be confessing to, right? Wrong!...completely...100% wrong! And when Bobby was talking about that this weekend I felt so convicted. The reason being is because if we just confess our sins to God, He WILL forgive us, but we need to be held accountable! If we just ask God to forgive us and move on, theres not really anyone there with us asking us how were doing in our walk with the Lord, or maybe how were doing with a certain problem that we're struggling with. So this really hit home to me. It reminded me that we need to be held accountable for our actions, not just by God, but by others as well. If we tell others of our sin, and ask to pray with them, have them pray for you continutally, meet with them regularly, I truly believe that we will better our walk with the Lord, immensly!

Another thing that I thought was a great reminder, was that everything we do, we do it for the glory of the Lord! Even something as little as homework. Homework! I mean think about that..sometimes I'll be sitting there doing chemistry, and totally not having a fun time, or even giving my full effort, when ALL that we do needs to be done for God! Yes...even chemistry! lol But it made me stop and think about all that I do, whether brushing my teeth, doing homework...or even...picking up the dog terd, needs to be done to the fullest because its for our Lord Jesus Christ! Amen?

A Martyr Remembered Forever

John Hus….a name not many people are familiar with, though he accomplished so much during his lifetime(1369-1415). Ive been assigned to research this guy and figure out how he has contributed to history. What I thought was just going to be another dreaded essay, turned out to be an amazing learning experience for me. John Hus’s ideas may seem normal now, but in his age they were revolutionary enough to cause death. The fact that he is mostly forgotten outside his native Czech Republic is perhaps as great an injustice as his execution 591 years ago.

“For though he was solidly a man of his time and place, his ideas merit broad recognition. In fact, most of them ring so true that it seems amazing they were ever considered revolutionary.” -Elesha Coffman.

Hus believed pastors should live godly lives and preach vivid, accessible sermons. They should not make fortunes off of their ministries but should think of themselves as servants. Sounds like some basic seminary knowledge so far. He also questioned the existence of purgatory and rejected confession, worship of images, and complex religious rites. Hus was not content to merely preach against abuse, but he also taught the “…pure gospel of Christ,” that he found in the New Testament. He declared to his listeners that all Christians have the right and duty to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. This so-called “heretical” statement- would later lie at the heart of the Protestant Reformation. In 1415, Hus was ordered to appear before the Council of Constance to recant his teaching. And unfortunately, upon his arrival at Constance, he was thrown into prison. At his trial, he was allowed no defense. He was ordered to make his choice- recant and be imprisoned for life, or refuse and be burned alive. That sure sounds fair. Like Martin Luther did years after him, Hus refused to recant. He felt that to do so would be to abandon the gospel of Christ.

Wow! When actually having an opportunity to stay alive(even though he would be in jail for the rest of his life), he would rather die for what he believes. That is such a good example of how we should be living today. And we have it easy! He was going to be killed. We don’t have guns to our heads. The only thing that we can be afraid of….is ridicule. And I’ve been thinking…this guy KNEW he was going to die. I’m not going to die for telling my friends the good news of Jesus Christ. If that isn’t convicting I don’t know what is.

Hus’s legacy doesn’t stop there. After Hus was martyred, there were 3 groups of his followers: Taborites, Utraquist, and Moderates. The Moderates believed in the “heart religion” which had been practiced by the primitive Christians of the New Testament Era. To them the Christian faith was more than just a theological puzzle to be solved, more than just another means of organizing society, and more than a battle to be fought…it was a way of life laid down by Jesus Christ, himself. In March of 1457 – more than 500 years ago, a large group of Moderates gathered in the village of Kunwald, near the castle of Lititz in Bohemia, and formed a society which they first called the Brethren of the Law of Christ. Those who joined did not intend to become a separate church. They were perfectly content to remain within the established church; but Rome wouldn’t allow it. The Unitas Fratrum traces its roots back to this society – making the Moravian Church the oldest Protestant Church in continuous existence today.

Here’s part of an article I found about John Wesley, a guy who came in contact with many obstacles on his way to finding Christ. On his quest, he ventured upon some Moravians…

During the four-month voyage Wesley had a striking experience with some Moravian fellow passengers. These followers of John Huss had left Bohemia for Germany to escape persecution, and were now on their way to America.

"In the midst of the Psalm wherewith their service began, the sea broke over, split the mainsail in pieces, covered the ship, and poured in between the decks as if the great deep had already swallowed us up. A terrible screaming began amongst the English. The Germans calmly sang on. I asked one of them afterwards, 'Was you not afraid?' He answered, 'I thank God, no.' I asked, 'But were not your women and children afraid?' He replied mildly, 'No; our women and children are not afraid to die.'"
Wesley saw that his own religion had not protected him from an intense fear of death. The Moravians had what he himself lacked. On landing he presented himself to the head of the Moravian community, and asked for help. The pastor asked bluntly, "Do you know Jesus Christ?"
"I paused and said, 'I know He is the Saviour of the world.' 'True,' he replied; 'but do you know he has saved you?' I answered, 'I hope He has died to save me.' He only added, 'Do you know yourself?' I said, 'I do,' But I fear they were vain words."
Wesley was impressed that the Moravians lived lives as careful as his, yet their life was one of peace and joy. He envied their gladness, which he lacked.

That’s only part of it. What he went through, and what he discovered about himself and God….is amazing. So my name's Heather. I'm a a junior. I'm a believer in Jesus Christ, and I love Him with my whole heart. He is the reason I wake up and breathe everyday. I live to glorify Him in everything I do. I cannot wait to be in eternity with Him forever. I also have an amazing family. A hard-working, fun, loving dad, who is such an example to me and everyone around him. A REALLY REALLY REALLY patient, caring mom, who teaches me daily how to be a good mother, wife, and woman of God. And an awesome brother who sometimes drives me crazy..... but I dont know what I would do without him.

Anyway, this whole blog started this weekend with the Blakeys. Pastor Bobby asked Curren n I if we had blogs...we said no. He was shocked. So right then and there he told us that this weekend....was going to be the weekend....that we started blogging. So on Friday we went over to Pastor Bobby's parents house...and got blogs. It was an adventure trying figure out names and titles and fun stuff like that. Some of the options of titles that were available were hilarious. Especially...hope for heather, and heather....the future. It was amazing. We had a great time.

But we eventually came up with Hope For the Future, which comes from my favorite verse: Jeremiah 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." This verse gives me hope that God loves us, and doesnt want us to fail. I put my complete trust in Christ, and the plans that He has for my life.
